day 7: personal care purgatory

If I cheated in the linen closet, I certainly made up for it today. It took me 3 and 1/2 hours to go through our personal care items. I think the key word is our. We all use the master bathroom (to save me from having to clean the others with any regularity) and there were lots of things that needed to go.

Admittedly, I am personally to blame for many of the extra items in this category. I have clearly spent too much time on the Sephora website over the last little while, and it shows up as waste in my bathroom vanities (pun intended). I think I’ve been looking for a miracle for the 40+ that isn’t surgical – it’s not working! Luckily I have Christine’s blog, 100 things in 100 days to point out that the The Good Stuff Connection Thrift Shop will accept unexpired toiletries for the SAGE Transition House.

I ended up with two boxes of samples and unexpired personal care items, and filled 2/3’s of the garbage bag that I started with the lingerie purge. I’m hopeful that I can avoid trashing anything in the future, but time will tell. I also did the math and discovered I’m over 20% through the bootcamp – yay me! The downside is that I’m not sure that I’m 20% of the way  to uncovering all of the stashes in our home.

The other mistake I know I’m making is that I can’t empty a drawer or cabinet without cleaning it. This adds loads of time to the task. Today I had it because included in one of our vanity drawers was a stash of spare change. It’s a rainy, professional development day, so the girls were home and they now had a new task – counting all the change! They didn’t finish, but it kept them busy for the entire time I was upstairs. I’m currently convincing myself that if I hadn’t found the change, the mess in the house would have been much worse than this.
