over the rainbow, marissa dress

I was (just) able to complete two Marissa dresses for my girls to wear to the Mirvish production of the Wizard of Oz on June 28th. This was sentimental for me because once my sisters and I were old enough to enjoy it, our end of school gift was usually a trip to the theatre in Toronto.

Cutting into any of my Heather Ross fabrics always makes me a bit nervous, so I have to be very motivated! I have been looking for the right pattern to highlight the unicorns, and loved the way that the ruched waistbands worked with the fabrics. The only mods I made on the pattern, were to construct the bodices more like the Fairytale dresses, so that the skirt gathering tucked up inside of the lining of the bodice. My eldest is a true ‘princess and the pea’ type and would not have worn the gathering in the skirt if it wasn’t tucked under the dress lining.

It was a bit challenging to get the ruching right on the bodice, so that the unicorns could be seen. I loved the dresses though, and the double gauze was perfect for a very hot and sticky day downtown Toronto.
